Argument Essay

Structure of the argumentative essay:

a good argumentative essay has several paragraphs that should be concentrated on different aspects of the essay

  • Introduction (The reader is introduced to the analyzed phenomenon and the opinion is revealed through a strong thesis statement).
  • Previous attempts to solve the argument (Are provided from literature).
  • The consequences of the problem (its negative or positive impact).
  • Repercussion of the argument in case it is not finally solved (supported with sources).
  • Connecting the argument with the provided facts.
  • Summary (a conclusion including main ideas and the thesis restatement).

Body:

  • Body Paragraph One should open with a transitional sentence. It should lead the reader into the first piece of evidence you use to support your thesis statement, your argument. It is essentially a mini-thesis for the paragraph. From the transitional/opening sentence, you can go on to cite evidence to support your argument. This evidence must all revolve around a single theme and should come in the form of a quotation (or factual information from a primary source). Example, Explanation, or supporting detail
  • Body Paragraph Two Body Paragraph Two should follow the exact same rules as Body Paragraph One. This time, pick the second theme in support of your thesis argument and cite evidence for it
  • Body Paragraph Three Body Paragraph Three should follow the exact same rules as Body Paragraph One and Two. Again, you must open this paragraph with a transitional sentence; one leading from the previous theme to the current theme.

Conclusion:

This part pulls your whole argument together by showing how the evidence you have presented provides sufficient grounds for accepting your conclusion.

General guidelines:

A conclusion can work on, or against you. In order to write a good argumentative essay, try to end up with:

  • an amplification (ringing conclusion);
  • a review of your main points;
  • a reference to something in your introduction;
  • a plea for action

Your conclusion and introduction serve as decorating paper for your essay. The introductory paragraph and conclusion enfold your essay like a piece of beautiful paper “enfolds” the gift. Surely they are not the main elements of the essay, but they are crucial for a general good impression about your essay.

Step 5: Revise… revise… revise.
