Essay Question

Essay writing is about answering the central essay question. That is your prior goal when writing any type of essay.

To generate a solid answer to the raised question you should bring about sufficient reasonable evidence and facts. All the information presented in the essay is built up around the essay thesis. It is a reliable standard compass to stick to the point in the course of the whole essay.

Step 1 – Understand the Question:

Spend time analyzing the essay question and identify what it is that is being asked of you. Underlining key words may help this process and it is important to continually refer back to the question to check that you are still answering it.

Step 2 – Revisit your Research Constructively:

Re-read the texts that you intend to use and make notes as you go along; i.e. highlight the main gist of what they are saying so that you can revisit the text quickly if need be. It is also useful to color code and highlight in a different pen the quotes you intend to use in your essay.

Step 3 – Arrange your Research Effectively:

Organize your readings (in piles, with post-it notes, as clippings, with an index) in a way that suits you. Ensure that you know where everything is and ‘group’ key areas to allow quick and easy reference points for you to use as you need to.

Step 4 – Do an Essay Plan for Guidance:

Plan your essay using a device that will suit your learning style. That could be a flowchart, a spider-gram, a list, a mini-script and so on. Plot in note form what you want to say and in what order you are going to say it.

Step 5 – Introduce your Essay to the Reader:

Write your introduction. This is the time to tell the reader what it is that you intend to do and to introduce the main points to them.

Step 6 – Write the Content of your Essay:

At this point, it is time to start putting together the ‘bulk’ of your essay and deal with the question head on.
Your content should be:

  • Ordered
  • Referenced
  • Analytical
  • Relevant

And it should include:

  • Descriptive, explanatory and persuasive writing styles
  • What has been said already (by other writers)
  • Your own standpoint

Step 7 – Write your Conclusion:

This is the section that allows you to summarise what has been said in your essay. You should include your opinions and ideas that have already been discussed and justified in the content and it should also be concluded with confidence.
